About Fair Trade

Fair Trade Development in Hong Kong

Fair Trade movement has become mature in the 1990s, when there are several cafes and organic shops started to introduce Fair Trade products in Hong Kong. In 2002, Oxfam launched the campaign “Make Trade Fair” to officially kick start the Fair Trade Movement. In 2008, Oxfam assisted three Fair Trade producers to display their Fair Trade products at the Hong Kong Food Expo, in order to promote Fair Trade to local citizens and approach global traders.

Just Java, a Hong Kong supplier licensed by Transfair, began selling Fair Trade coffee.

WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong: More Hong Kong people have been aware of trade injustice and that Fair Trade could be a way to help the poor and marginalized producers to strengthen their positions in trade. There were 50 outlets/cafes selling about 30 Fair Trade products in Hong Kong.

Oxfam Fair Trade promotional campaign was officially launched with its first specialty store in The Beauty of Grace Foundation Limited, selling various Fair Trade items.

  • 10 local groups organized the first Fair Trade Fair on the World Fair Trade Day. Oxfam Hong Kong, together with 6 local and overseas fair trade groups to have the first Fair Trade pavilion at Hong Kong Food Festival

  • Fair Taste became the first local brand who received the FLO certificate (coffee and tea)

  • Fair Trade Workplace Society, a society under Fair Trade Hong Kong, was set up to promote Fair Trade and ethical values in workplace

  • FTHK started “Bring Fair Trade to your School” program, encouraged students to participate in Fair Trade activities

Fair Trade Hong Kong organized the first Fair Trade Ambassador Program. Training sessions were provided to volunteers who became the school ambassadors to promote Fair Trade messages in the campuses.

Fair Trade Fortnight 2011 has been held by the organization of Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation and Oxfam Hong Kong. The fortnight theme was “Love Fairness, Support Fair Trade” and a Fair Trade Carnival held in Olympian City II. Together with the carnival, the foundation has also launched the first “Fair Trade Stamp Collection Scheme” as to encourage citizen supporting Fair Trade by purchasing Fair Trade products.

  • 2012 Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation officially joined Fairtrade International and became a Fairtrade Marketing Organization (FMO). It authorizes to grant and monitor the certification of Fair Trade products among Hong Kong, Macau and China

  • The first Fair Trade Vending Machine is available to the public for purchasing fair trade products in order to increase their awareness of Fair Trade

In November, Fair Trade Hong Kong Foundation and Fullness Social Enterprises Society (FSES) co-organized the first "Ethical Consumption Month". Together with other social enterprises, they aimed to promote buying Fair Trade products over the others and put Ethical Consumption in practice.

  • The first “Be My Fair Valentine!” campaign was organized on the streets of Tsim Sha Tsui to promote Fair Trade

  • The Fair Trade Fortnight 2014 was held in Metroplaza, Kwai Fong. There were many game booths and exhibitions to help promote Fair Trade. It hit the sales of HK$260,000 in just 3 days

  • The first "Fair Trade Charity Football Match" was organized for corporates to promote Fair Trade through football competitions. 12 teams from different corporations had participated and there were on-site booths and exhibitions in which participants could learn how Fair Trade put an end to poverty for farmers

  • The first Charity premiere of awards-winning film “Chasing Ice” serves to promote a message: “Support Fair Trade & help maintain sustainable development”

  • “Fair Trade Fiesta 2015” was organized with the support of attending celebrities like Miss Florence Hui Hiu-fai, SBS, Secretary for Home Affairs , Miss Leila Kong and singer Miss Eman Lam. Under the theme “Fairness inside you”, it encouraged the public from different sectors to support Fair Trade products and positive changes to the production system. Sales revenue accumulated to HK$300,000 through exhibitions and carnivals in 3 days

The 3rd Fair Trade Charity Football Match was successfully held on 29th October. This year, we received overwhelming response. 20 teams with more than 200 football players competed against each other to ‘kick out’ poverty. As usual, the football used in match were Fairtrade certified. We took this chance to draw cross-sectors’ attention to the issue of exploited producers and child labour, and to raise funds for the work of FTHK.

  • FTHK organized the first Fair Trade Producer Trip, 10 students participating Jockey Club Fair Trade School Award were invited and visited Fair Trade Cooperatives in Sri-Lanka, witness the impact of Fair Trade. Participating students would spread the Fair Trade message in the campus and community

  • "Fairly Delicious" has been launched in July with various Fair Trade Trader Partners (Chopsticks, Fair Taste and Fair Circle) to facilitate the cafes and restaurant to source Fair Trade ingredients and introduce ‘Fair Trade Specialty Dishes’. The campaign aims at bridging the links of Asia-Pacific Producers and Hong Kong consumers, its emphasized the ingredients from Asia-Pacific Fair Trade producers, including the Rice from Cambodia, Tea from India and Mainland China

  • In hopes of improving dietary habits of children from grass-roots families, FTHK launched “Fair Quinoa For Children” campaign in August 2018. Up to February 2019, thousands of local families had benefited from our donation of quinoa with high nutrient content. The campaign is also in favor of the development in Peru by offering job opportunities and fair income to Peruvian women. It had received great support from celebrities, namely politician Mr. Roy Kwong and actress Miss To Siu Kiu, and that New Youth Barbershop wrote “The Quinoa Song” to educate the public through music

  • The first Fair Trade Corporate Label was successfully held in December, Fair Trade Corporate Label promotes sustainable business models in supply chains, aspires to reduce environmental harm, ensures that employees are fairly treated, and develops a society with absolute fairness and justice. In early December, 40 companies that showed excellence in practicing fair trade were awarded, in which the Extraordinary Award went to Peninsula Merchandising Limited. The novel “Good Boss Under Mangkhut” Award showed appreciation to flexible employers on the typhoon day

  • FTHK conducted a media tour in Pakistan with 100Most, we visited Pakistani sports ball producers and local organizations working on gender equality, generated an online video series with 100Most and promoted "In Her Shoes" campaign

 

  • FTHK organized the fair trade football charity sale at THE FOREST, everyone can support the basic needs of Pakistani women by purchasing the fair trade footballs which are made by them. We also launched the “Fair Trade cup 2019 X My Favorite Female Footballer Media Event” which seeks to introduce the public of the candidates in the "Most-liked Female Footballer" and to draw attention to female footballers in Hong Kong. The Division 1 female footballers shared their "football stories" and played football game with the audiences.
