‘Small-scale farmer’ is always mentioned when we talking about Fair Trade. So, how small are they?

On average, small farmer in developing countries own 2 hectares of farmland which approximately equal to 2 standard football fields. Comparing to the narrow dwelling in Hong Kong, they are definitely big landlords. However, we should pay attention that a normal growth cycle of a lettuce is 30-50 days, a cocoa bean tree even takes 4-5 years to reap a harvest. If the farmer only have 2 hectares of farmland, how long should they wait for a harvest for living. Therefore, collaboration among small-scale farmers is especially important.Organizing a cooperative can consolidate farmers’ power, and even increase the diversity of crop.
